ISO Certified

Three standards, one management system, audited twice a year

St Cross Electronics is certified to ISO 9001:2015 for quality management, ISO 14001:2015 for environmental management, and ISO 45001:2018 for occupational health and safety management.

We have held ISO 9001 continuously since 1990, when the standard was known as BS5750 Part 2. More than thirty-five years of unbroken certification is not something a supplier can acquire quickly, and it is worth more than the certificate itself.

What we hold

All three are certified by ISOQAR under UKAS accreditation, certificate number 9204.

The certified scope reads: "St Cross Electronics manufacture and supply cable harness assemblies to the electronics industry." Scope matters more than most buyers realise. A certificate covers a defined activity at a defined site, and ours covers the work we actually do, at the single site where we do it.

What UKAS accreditation adds

This is the part most suppliers leave out, and it is the part that decides whether a certificate means anything.

ISO publishes the standards. It does not certify anyone. Certification is carried out by independent bodies, and in the UK those bodies are themselves assessed by the United Kingdom Accreditation Service, the national accreditation body recognised by government. UKAS checks that a certification body is competent, impartial and consistent in how it audits.

Our certification body is ISOQAR, which holds UKAS accreditation. So the chain runs: ISO sets the standard, ISOQAR audits us against it, and UKAS audits ISOQAR.

Anyone can issue a certificate with a standard number printed on it. A UKAS-accredited certificate is evidence that the body issuing it was itself found competent to do so. If you are assessing suppliers, checking for the accreditation mark rather than the standard number alone is a two-second test worth running on every certificate you are sent, including ours.

One management system, not three

We run quality, environmental, and health and safety as a single integrated management system rather than three parallel ones with their own documentation and their own audits.

The practical difference shows up in the decisions. A change to a soldering process touches workmanship, fume extraction and waste at the same time. Under three separate systems, that is three reviews, three sets of records, and three chances for one to drift out of step with the others. Under one, it is a single controlled change, assessed against all three standards at once.

For you, that means the quality system you are approving is the whole system, not the part of it labelled quality.

What an ISO 9001 certificate does, and does not, do

Worth being precise, because this gets overstated constantly.

It does not make your product compliant with anything. ISO 9001 certifies a management system, not an item. No cable assembly is "ISO 9001 compliant", ours included, and any supplier telling you otherwise has misunderstood their own certificate.

What it does give you is documented, audited, repeatable process control: defined procedures from goods-in to dispatch, records against every job, a non-conformance process when something goes wrong, and an external body checking twice a year that we still work the way we say we do.

That supports your own compliance obligations. It does not replace them, and we would rather say so than let you assume otherwise.

Audited twice a year

ISOQAR audits us at our Southampton site twice a year. An audit is not a document review. The auditor follows real jobs through the building, pulls records against them, interviews operators, and tests whether the written procedure matches what is actually happening on the bench.

Findings have to be closed out with evidence, and certification depends on it. An internal audit programme runs alongside, so issues surface before an external auditor finds them.
